Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II review

Rolls-Royce raises the bar with the latest Phantom

Rolls-Royce, with the Phantom, had set a new benchmark in terms of luxury tourers. There was great performance, and all from the rich comfort of one of the most luxurious car cabins in the world. Rolls had outdone itself. Or so we thought, till the carmaker came up with the Phantom Series II. If you thought the old Phantom was good, then this new one will absolutely take you by storm.
There are improvements all round. The new car is even smoother than the old one, thanks to a new eight-speed gearbox mated to the twelve-cylinder motor. It is more economical because of the extra gears, but then, most Rolls owners have not been known to care much about fuel bills. The suspension has also been tweaked subtly to make the Phantom a tad more sporty. A more responsive throttle map can be turned on via an ‘S’ button on the steering wheel. Not that being sporty was ever a condition with any Rolls.
The new Phantom does do a great job of amplifying comfort levels and that feeling of luxury. The suspension gobbles up bad roads with utter ease, faint and nearly unnoticeable thuds the only indication. Barely any noise creeps into the cabin, even when you rev the engine freely. So when you step inside, you’re practically sealed into luxury.
So, what are the changes made to the Phantom II? The old car’s pig-eye fog lamps have made way for a nicer-looking LED headlight setup featuring fully automatic brights and some rectilinear daytime running lights. The imposing Parthenon grille is now made of a single piece of stainless steel, unlike the bonded three-piece component of old. Other exterior changes are
to the C pillar, which gets new chrome treatment, and a rear bumper that’s been refined.
The six-and-three-quarter-litre engine makes ‘adequate’ power, which is a bit of an understatement. The 453bhp and 73.4kgm of torque gets to 100kph in 5.7sec, but it never feels that quick. This I believe, is down to the taller ratio in the new differential that makes occupants feel like they’re gathering speed when they’re actually piling it on.
For a car that’s this big, it’s rather easy to drive. The square dimensions make guiding it through traffic a cinch, the view from the high driver’s seat is excellent, and visibility is improved by the elephant-ear rear view mirrors.
This brings us to that other useful feature that the new Series II has – cameras all around the car that beam images to BMW’s latest iDrive screen. And when you’re trying to park this leviathan, you need all the help you can get.
The cabin, of course, is finished to the expected highest standards, with lovely wood, soft leather, bright chrome bezels and tactile handles and buttons. Everything you touch has the right texture and tension to tell you it’s the best possible solution for its purpose. The thin-rimmed steering wheel is evocative of the traditional, albeit with multiple buttons integrated around the hub, and you can’t help but get sucked in by the old-world charm that this cabin exudes.
In the end, it may seem like Rolls-Royce has been extremely cautious with upgrading the Phantom, but when the last one was already so good, I think there’s no point in fixing what wasn’t broken. Sir Henry Royce had a principle – ‘take the best that exists and make it better’. That’s exactly what Rolls has done with the Series II.

New Honda compact SUV teased

New concept could point at a future compact SUV based on the Jazz.

New Honda compact SUV teased

Honda will unveil a new concept vehicle at the Detroit motor show that will become a new baby SUV. The production version of the Urban SUV Concept is expected to go on sale within the next three years.

The new car is likely to be spun off the new Honda Jazz platform, which is due in the next two years, and with which the firm is targeting sales of up to 400,000 units a year in America and Europe.

Unlike with previous generations of the car, Honda is giving its global regions freedom to develop the Jazz to suit local tastes. The European version is expected to be built at the firm's base in Swindon.

The baby SUV is a key part of Honda president Takanobu Ito's ambitious plans to double global sales to six million cars a year by 2017.

A range of carmakers are offering very tempting discounts. We find out the best deals.

Carmakers dole out huge year-end discounts

The year-end brings with it a whole host of reasons for car buyers to celebrate. This time of year is one of the best to seal the deal on the car of your choice, as carmakers dish out huge deals and discounts in a bid to clear their inventories. And if buying a car that’s made in 2012 instead of 2013 isn’t much of a deterrent, there’s no better time than now to upgrade to a new set of wheels and make the most of your budget.
Kicking off the list is Hyundai. The carmaker is offering a cash discount of Rs 60,000 on all the variants of its Santa Fe SUV.

Fiat is also offering a whole range of discounts on the Linea. The Linea 1.4 Active Absolute edition is being offered with free insurance worth Rs 25,848, a cash discount of Rs 25,000, an exchange bonus of Rs 15,000 and a corporate discount of Rs 7,000, equaling to a chunky savings of Rs 72, 848. The Linea 1.4 Dynamic Absolute edition also has similar cash, exchange bonus and corporate discounts, but the free insurance worth Rs 29,325 bumps the total savings to Rs 76,325. If you’re in the market for the diesel Linea, however, there are even bigger gains to be had. The Absolute edition of the Active, Dynamic and Emotion packs stretch up to Rs 76,442, Rs 80,026 and Rs 81,281 respectively.

Potential Honda owners will have much reason to rejoice this year end. Dealers are offering a fat Rs 2,50,000 discount on the Accord 2.4 AT and the Accord V6 AT. The Civic, which is now discontinued, is also being offered with a hefty Rs 1,50,000 discount on all trim levels.
Mahindra also has deals on its Scorpio and Xylo. The Scorpio VLX 4x4 is being offered with free insurance worth Rs 46,015 and an exchange bonus of Rs 10,000, while the VLX 4x2 trim is being offered with free insurance worth Rs 43,393 and a similar exchange bonus of Rs 10,000. The Scorpio VLX fitted with an auto ‘box has quite a big discount on of Rs 58,992, which includes free insurance worth Rs 48,992 and an exchange bonus of Rs 10,000. The Xylo E8 can be bought with free insurance worth Rs 44,862 and an exchange bonus of Rs 10,000, totalling up to Rs 54,862 in savings.
Skoda is offering very tempting discounts on its Laura with the 2.0-litre diesel motor. The L&K AT is being sold with a cash discount of Rs 90,000, along with a corporate discount of Rs 17,500, bringing the total discount to a whopping Rs 1,07,500. Similar discounts are being offered on the Ambience AT, Elegance, Ambiente and Elegance AT trim levels. The Superb’s 1.8 TSI trim levels are being sold with an even greater discount. The Ambition MT, Elegance MT, and Elegance AT are all being offered with a cash discount of Rs 1,50,000 and a corporate discount of Rs 12,500. The Superb’s 2.0 TDI’s Ambition AT and Elegance AT trim levels are also being sold with similar discounts totalling up to Rs 1,62,500.
Perhaps the biggest discount, however, is the one Tata is offering. There is a huge cash discount of Rs 2,00,000 and an exchange bonus of Rs 50,000 to be had on all the trim levels of the Aria.

With such tempting discounts on the table, this is the best time to go out and splurge on the car of your dreams.

Refreshed Mercedes E-Class revealed

The E-Class gets the 'most comprehensive makeover' in Mercedes' history.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its significantly updated E-class. The mid-life makeover includes revised styling, updated engines, a higher level of standard equipment, new safety features and hi-tech options. The changes are described as the most comprehensive in Mercedes’ history. The heavily revised E-class is set to get its first public outing at the Detroit motor show in January.
The major thrust of Mercedes’ efforts to increase the appeal of the E-class centres around its styling, which has been altered more significantly than is usual for a mid-life facelift, most notably at the front. The quad headlamp treatment, which had been a key design feature of the E-class since 1995, is gone, to be replaced by more conventional, prominent single-assembly headlights that feature LED daytime running lights as standard.
Further changes have been made to the grille, where there are now two options, one sporty and the other more traditional. The front bumper and bonnet are also revised.
The heavily structured rear wheelarches have been smoothed to give the car a more cohesive appearance. A new crease line runs from the rear door through to the tail lights, which retain the same shape but receive new LED-imbued graphics, whose horizontal emphasis is meant to widen the car visually. There is also a re-profiled rear bumper.
Globally, the standard E-class range will be offered with just one petrol engine in two states of tune. The turbocharged 2.0-litre unit is available with 181bhp in the E200 and 208bhp in the E250. A third petrol option will be offered in the yet to be revealed E63 AMG, which is tipped to offer an incremental increase over the 518bhp of the current twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8.
Two carried-over diesels are planned: a 2.1-litre four-cylinder with 134bhp in the E200 CDI, 168bhp in the E220 CDI and 201bhp in the E250 CDI, and a 3.0-litre V6 with 248bhp in the E350.
Among the new safety systems incorporated on the revised E-class is Collision Prevention Assist, a radar-based collision warning system with the ability to brake the car in order to reduce the severity of an impact.
The range of new and/or improved optional systems includes Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, which helps keep the car centred in a chosen lane and tracks traffic in tailbacks, and Brake Assist Plus with Junction Assist, which is able to detect cross traffic and pedestrians and can boost the braking power if the brakes are insufficiently applied by the driver to avoid an impact.
Expect the updated E-Class to reach our shores late next year.

FIRST DRIVE Honda Amaze review, test drive

We drive Honda's new Dzire competitor - and its a diesel!

DETAILS

Honda's much-awaited Brio-based Amaze could be a game changer for Honda in India. That’s the feeling we got when we drove the car at the Honda-owned Motegi race track in Japan. To give you a brief, the Amaze is a sub-four-metre saloon, much like the Maruti Swift Dzire, which Honda used as a benchmark extensively when engineering this car. However, where the Dzire has divided opinion for its truncated tail, the Amaze has a far more traditional three-box look. In fact, the integration of the boot onto the hatchback body is fairly cohesive. There’s a strong link to the City in the Amaze’s wraparound tail-lamps,which also serve as the end point for the sharply rising belt line. The boot lid itself doesn’t look all that special but it does open to reveal a useable luggage bay. Honda hasn’t disclosed boot volume yet but what’s clear is that the Amaze has trumped the Dzire in this area.
At 3990mm, the Amaze is significantly longer than the Brio, and 60mm of the length extension is over the wheelbase. This, along with the different roof line, has warranted the need for larger rear doors. Further forward, it’s only the restyled front bumper and an additional chrome slat on the front grille that differentiate the Amaze from the Brio.

The big shock is once you step inside. The cabin is far more spacious than you’d expect and kneeroom is really impressive too. Sure, it’s not as spacious as the larger full-size saloons like the Toyota Etios or Tata Manza but it’s certainly a lot more spacious than the Dzire. Seat comfort is really good too, helped by a large centre armrest, though some may find the seat back a tad too reclined. A low centre tunnel helps middle passenger comfort but the cabin’s limited width means sitting three abreast in the back will still be quite a squeeze.

Up front, the cabin looks familiar. The dashboard is identical to the Brio, so you get a slightly Spartan centre console and plastics that, while well put together, don’t look rich. Even the comfy front seats are carried over from the hatch, so just like the Brio, the driver’s perch does not get height adjustment. You can expect the top-end Amaze to feature an audio player with USB, steering-mounted audio controls and a rear defogger, which are not available on the Brio. In-cabin storage spaces include a total of four cup holders. You get bottle holders on each of the four doors though the exposed metal near them is a sign of cost-cutting by Honda.

Space and comfort aside, what's also important is the engine under the bonnet of this car. It will be Honda's first diesel engine in India, and though Honda hasn't revealed the 1.5-litre i-DTEC motor's power or fuel-efficiency figures, expect around 90bhp and an official ARAI-tested figure in the region of 25-26kpl. The engine is a scaled-down version of the 1.6-litre diesel that Honda sells in Europe, so this four-cylinder unit has a twin-cam, 16-valve head. On the Amaze, this engine will come with a fixed geometry turbocharger.

Driving it around the Motegi test track in Japan, the motor impresses with its refinement. Even better, though, is its responsiveness. It pulls well from as low as 1200rpm, and there's a gentle surge at 1500rpm when the turbo comes on song. Honda has tuned the engine to deliver the bulk of its power under 3000rpm, which is where the engine will reside in typical city driving scenarios anyway. Also cementing its city-friendliness are the gearshift and clutch action, both of which are smooth and light. However, hold onto a gear longer than necessary and you will find power fall sharply post 3800rpm on its way up to the 4500rpm limit. What’s clear is that this is not a free-revving motor like what we’re accustomed to from Honda. It’s also in the upper reaches of the rev band that you’ll find the engine sound increasingly thrashy, though refinement at lower engine speeds is impressive.

While driving, we also find the steering has more weight than the Brio's and this is a good thing. The heavier diesel engine at the front has required Honda to stiffen the front springs though the rest of the suspension is the same as the Brio’s – front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion bar. Even the wheel size at 175/65 R14 tyres are the same. However, given the smooth surface on which we drove, it was impossible to say how the Amaze will take to India’s potholed roads.

The Amaze is no doubt an impressive car. It’s got a spacious enough cabin and a refined diesel engine that promises to be fuel efficient too. It will also be sold with the Brio’s peppy 1.2-litre, 88bhp petrol engine. If Honda can price the Amaze at par with the Dzire it has the potential to shake up the Indian saloon car market. Honda's truly back in the race and how!

JLR to build all-new Land Rover in Saudi Arabia

A state-of-the-art pressing plant is to be set up in Saudi Arabia, where JLR will commence production of an all-new Land Rover in 2015.

Jaguar Land Rover has announced that it is all set to expand into Saudi Arabia by buying aluminium from what is being described as one of the world’s largest aluminium smelters. After signing a letter of intent with the National Industrial Clusters Development Program in Saudi Arabia, the carmaker is expected to produce body panels for future models, and other components, at an all-new, state-of-the-art pressing plant that is being built in the kingdom.

According to Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, the move will allow JLR to secure the “cheapest aluminium in the world”.

A memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed in the middle of 2013, before the production begins in early 2015. There’s no news on which new model will be built in Saudi, but JLR sources have hinted that it could be based on the new Range Rover platform.

The new model will initially be sent to the Saudi line as a ‘knocked down’ kit to allow the operation to gain experience, before full production switches to the country.

The main driver behind this radical move, says Speth, is to secure a steady, cost-effective supply of aluminium as global demand for the material starts to rise. Global fuel economy regulations are expected to make the use of lightweight materials increasingly important for the car industry.

Saudi Arabia is well positioned for this project because it has both vast bauxite deposits — the rock that is the main source of aluminium — and the cheap power ideal for the energy-intensive process that’s needed to create aluminium.

Speth says JLR is committed to a “lightweight future” and its demand for aluminium will rise considerably, with at least four Land Rover company models made from the material. Most future Jaguars are also expected to be made of aluminium.
